We are often asked, "When should I replace my helmet?" The industry norm is every 5 years.
Here are some pointers for areas to check on your helmet.
1) Check for damage!
If you have been in any kind of accident it is important to replace your helmet. Even if you can't visibly see damage. This is something that people take lightly. It is important to note that the integrity of a helmet is not meant to absorb multiple crashes. It is a one and done situation.
Regularly inspect the shell, the lining, the straps and buckles. You want to make sure that you see no structural damage on any of these parts. Look for splits, dents and cracks.
2) Properly care for your helmet!
You probably want to maximize the life of your helmet. We would like you to as well. What can you do?
Consider where your helmet is placed. Don't sling it around or drop it. Carefully pack your helmet and gently move it from place to place.
Clean your helmet. You want to make sure that your helmet is clean. Wipe it down with soap and water and most helmets allow you to wash the pads.
Keep your helmet away from chemicals that can compromise the construction of your helmet.
3) How to pick out a new helmet?
Consider how much you ride and what type of riding you are doing. Determine your budget and the features that are important to you.
There is a wide array of pricing, materials and structural features that add to the lifetime and safety that your helmet will provide.
We would be happy to take a look at your helmet and to help size you and pick out a new one.
