Meet Aaron Shapley

1. What is your Day Job?
Vice President, Franklin Templeton InvestmentsI manage relationships with some of the firm’s largest institutional clients including insurance companies and other financial organizations
2. Reasons why you Train?
I train to race, and continue to find ways to improve. There are so many elements of triathlon, there is always something you can improve which is what keeps me motivated. The other driving force are the health benefits this sport provides - physical, mental, and emotional. I feel better, look better, and am happier when I’m pushing myself in training.
3. What BIG Goal Motivates you?
Success in triathlon can be defined in any number of ways and is so individualized. I always want to compare myself to the very best. Having been a competitive swimmer for a number of years, times are easily compared. With triathlon, times don’t transcend from one race to another. Courses are different, conditions are different. So I get excited about the little things and learning how to "race" new, longer distances. Ultimately, podium finishes at larger events are the goal - Ironman, 70.3, race series.
4. How old were you when you did your first Triathlon?
I did a sprint triathlon in Tucson, AZ when I was 27 years old, because my boss at the time thought he could beat me (I crushed him). Preparing for that first race brought some discipline back to my workout routine which I enjoyed. I dabbled in the sport for a while, taking a number of years off, until getting more focused a year ago. One of the few regrets I have are not getting more serious a little earlier when I still had some good speed in me.
5. Favorite Accomplishment or Race result?
Going sub-11 hours at 2017 IM Florida. As hard as Ironman racing is, it was a great experience and I know I have more in me. I’ll be back.
6. Favorite race distance?
I’m getting better at racing versus finishing 70.3s, which I’ve really enjoyed and will continue to work on through 2018. The local Austin races are always fun as well.
7. What sports were you involved in before Triathlon?
I’ve been a swimmer most of my life and competed for Cal in college (but was a sprint breaststroker which doesn’t really translate into open water, distance swimming that well).
8 . What's your favorite pre race Dinner?
Carbs and protein - pasta, steak, chicken, or a combination of all three
9. Post race splurge?
Ideally a burger and beer following a massage
10. How many bikes do you own?
4 - two TT, one road, one mountain
11. What's your favorite podcast?
I’ve never listened to a podcast
12. What are Words You Live by?
“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” That can happen, figuratively and literally, in any race. The mental skill set you develop through consistent training allows you to adapt on the fly. Those skills are essential for a successful race, training session, and life.
